Nida Allam
Durham County Commissioner Nida Allam is the first Muslim woman ever elected to public office in North Carolina.
The daughter of Indian and Pakistani immigrants, Nida grew up in this district, was educated in NC public schools, and attended NC State University. But in 2015, three of her closest friends, Deah Barakat, Yusor Abu-Salha, and Razan Abu-Salha were killed in an anti-Muslim murder. She turned her grief into action to make sure that her community always had a seat at the table.
After being Bernie Sanders’ NC political director in 2016, Nida won a historic election to the Durham County Board of Commissioners in 2020. In 2022, Nida first ran to represent North Carolina’s 4th Congressional District and despite over $4 million from AIPAC and Crypto that made the primary the most expensive in state history, Nida came up just nine points short of victory. Now she returns to run for this seat, with even more community support to take on billionaire Super PACs.
Since then, Nida’s focused on growing her family and delivering a more affordable future for North Carolinians. As County Commissioner, Nida has played an instrumental part in raising the minimum wage for county employees, delivering the largest investment in public education in County history, championing a property tax relief program for low-income homeowners, investing millions in affordable housing and mental healthcare, and creating the first Immigrant and Refugee Services Program in the South. Nida lives in Durham with her husband and two adorable children.
